Acceso Colombia – Carmen Borda, Farmer
“I found out about Acceso through the visit of several agricultural engineers who told us about the desire of Acceso to improve the capacity of farmers in Boyacá.”
Carmen works for the Agrocucaita Association of producers both as an associate and supplier of onions. She is 40 years old and lives with her 94-year-old father, 16-year-old son who is in high school, and her 7-year-old daughter who is in elementary school.
“Acceso has helped to connect me with women who are heads of their household such as myself. I also appreciate the consultation and guidance from the agricultural engineers – that is very valuable support. Now we can sell our produce at better prices without being dependent on intermediaries who paid us any price they wanted. We can also generate employment for people in the region [on our farms], especially women heads of household who truly need it. ”
Prior to Acceso, Carmen spent her earnings on necessities – food, health, education, clothing – and invested a little bit of money in her crops. Thanks to the additional income she is earning as a result of selling her produce to Acceso, she has been able to improve the nutrition of her family by purchasing more nutritious foods. She has also been able to save more money and give her children more of what they need. Her dream is to have her own house for her family, and for her children to have professional jobs when they grow up.
